MEd Educational Leadership

Concentration in Leadership Studies

Towards the end of my time in undergrad I found myself feeling adrift. Though I loved the coursework in both programs I chose to pursue, I no longer felt that the professional theatre world was where I wanted to end up and I wasn't sure that potential employers would see the same value that I did in my degrees. Almost all of my professional experience to this point had been in education, mostly working with preK-12, which I absolutely adored, but after my summer internship in Seattle, I was no longer certain that I wanted to teach full-time. Thankfully, on a whim, I decided to apply for a job as a tour guide and administrative assistant in the VCUarts admissions office. Through my work in this position, I discovered the possibilities of the world of higher education. As my final semester got started, I began the lengthy process of searching for my first full-time job with the goal of further exploring the job possibilities in higher education.

Then, in March 2020 our world changed forever due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I was incredibly fortunate to sign an offer letter for my current position as Administrative Assistant in the Philosophy Department just one week before VCU went into a hiring freeze. I  began the position in a "work from home" arrangement, and, after a few weeks of work, decided that I wasn't quite done with school and could handle doing both. I knew that if I wanted to continue to work in higher education I would eventually need an advanced degree, so, I began to look at programs at the VCU School of Education. As soon as I came across the MEd in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Leadership Studies program I knew that it was the one for me. The Leadership Studies concentration offers great flexibility for student specialization which allowed me to really explore and narrow in on my particular area of interest: accessibility (especially through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens) in higher education. A complete course list from my graduate work is included below, as well as several writing samples - please feel free to reach out using the "contact" tab with any questions you may have!

Writing Samples

Changes in White female college students' CBRI over four years: The influence of compositional diversity and campus climate

I began this line of research with a paper by the same name in TEDU 651 in the Spring of 2021; this writing sample is from the proposal I completed in my research-focused course that expanded on this topic.

Policy brief: HB127, gifted education as college preparation

As a graduate of  a Governor's School, I have found myself reflecting frequently on the effect that this outstanding education has had on my life. In my final semester, I chose to focus on these Governor's Schools (and gifted education broadly) from two different and related perspectives: policy and equity.

Stakeholder engagement analysis: Maggie L. Walker Governor's School

While the Policy Brief for ADMS 616 looked into the design and effects of HB127 and the history of gifted education, broadly, this analysis (for ADMS 630) applied these concepts to concrete data collected from my own alma mater. The sample below synthesizes and analyzes this data.

Equity audit: Philosophy department, Virginia Commonwealth University

In Fall 2021 (for ADMS 622) I was tasked with conducted an equity audit of my organization that included summary, analysis, and recommendations for improvement. Due to the sensitive nature of this material, please contact me via the below button to access the PDF.
